Interlibrary Loan Help Guide: Renewing & Returning Items

Your guide to using FAU's Interlibrary Loan services

UPDATE: Students may now place requests for pickup of FAU Materials

As a preventative measure against COVID-19, the FAU library will be closed starting at 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 18th and will be closed until further notice. Due to this, we will be unable to fill ILL requests for physical items until we reopen. However, electronically-delivered items such as PDFs can still be acquired. Please feel free to email us during this time as we will be monitoring it remotely.

Physical items located at the Boca Campus Library will be available on demand to all Students and Faculty. Materials from the HBOI or Jupiter Campus Libraries are currently unavailable. For more information, please click here.

**All ILL items have been renewed at this time regardless of the original due date**

You can renew your ILL loan ten days before it is due.

To Renew Your ILL Request:

1. Log in to your ILL Account

2. In the left hand column under View click on Checked Out Items

3. A list of your checked out items will appear. Click on the Transaction Number (it is left of the title) of the item you would like to renew.

4. If the item is renewable, there will be a Renew Request option at the top of the screen. Click on Renew Request.

5. If you do not see a Renew Request option, please contact the ILL Office directly for help.

6. Your renewal request will be sent to the ILL office and your item will be assigned a tentative due date. 

  • If the lender approves your request, you will be notified of the new due date by email.
  • If the lender denies your renewal request, you will also receive an email letting you know when you need to return it by.

FAU ILL will follow the guidelines set by the lending library and has no ability to override their decision with regards to any due date extension.

7. If you still need an item and were unable to renew it, we recommend that you put in a new request for the item.  You can easily put in a duplicate request by clicking on Clone Request on your open request, this will copy all the request information into a new request form:


UBorrow requests can be renewed one time only, during the week before it is due.

To Renew Your UBorrow Request:

1. You are able to renew your UBorrow request using your FAU library account.

  • Enter your 14 digit library card number and pin (your birth month and day)
  • Click sign in

2. In the top right corner, click on the loan/renewals button.


3. Scroll down your list of checked out items, near the bottom you will see your UBorrow Items On Loan. Find the item you would like to renew and click the request renewal button next to the correct title.


4. Your renewal request will be sent to the lending library for consideration.  You will receive an email with the new due date after they have approved it.  If you do not receive an email within a couple days, please contact the ILL Office directly for help.




  • All Interlibrary Loan,UBorrow, or FAU borrowed materials may be returned to the Service Desk or bookdrops on the Boca, Harbor Branch, or Jupiter Campuses.
  • Please return materials with included ILL paperwork.
  • Electronic Articles do not need to be returned; they will delete themselves from your ILL Account after 30 days.
  • Unless otherwise noted, photocopies of articles do not need to be returned.
  • For material marked as Library Use Only, you should hand the item directly to Access Services staff and let them know that you no longer need it.
  • Materials may be shipped to the Boca Campus Library ILL Department via Campus Mail. We suggest you ship it a few days before it is due as the due date is the day it is due to our office.

Materials returned via Campus Mail or US Mail should be sent using the padded envelope or box that the material was sent in. Borrowed materials should always be protectively packed to minimize risk of damage.

Failure to return items on time or items returned damaged may be subject to fines, fees, or other sanctions.
