Grey Literature for Architecture

Grey Literature includes resources that are not peer-reviewed and have not been published in mainstream publications. When thinking of resources beyond peer-reviewed journal articles, consider the following (and other sources):

  • Grey Literature databases / search engines
  • Building Plans (physical and digitized)
  • Company papers and archives
  • Conference papers and presentations
  • Dissertations and Theses
  • National, state, and local records (e.g., https://digitalarchives.broward.org, Florida Memory)
  • Primary sources (diaries, letters, personal papers, etc.)
  • Social media (Facebook, blogs, tweets, podcasts, etc.)
  • Technical reports
  • White papers and other research reports

Search using a browser (Bing, Google, Firefox, etc.) for a topic or person and filter to find results on websites by the site's URL suffix. Examples of this are .edu (educational), .org (belong to an organization), .gov (U.S. government), or .mil (U.S. military). Other less precise suffixes include .com (commercial site) and .net (a kind of a catch-all for sites that don't fit into the preceding suffixes).

  • Example:   tadao ando site:.edu   (finds websites from educational sites about your topic)

tadao ando site:.org    (find websites from organizations about your topic, like museums, foundations, professional organizations)
