FAU Libraries' Scholarly Communication Program: Open Access Week 2018

Library OA Memberships

FAU Libraries is a member of SPARC, a global coalition committed to making Open the default for research and education.

FAU is a partner of the HathiTrust Digital Library, a partnership of major academic and research libraries collaborating to compile a massive digital library of published scholarship. As a benefit of the HathiTrust partnership, FAU users are able to download available ebooks by signing in with their FAUNet ID.

What is Open Access

Open-access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. What makes it possible is the internet and the consent of the author or copyright-holder.

In most fields, scholarly journals do not pay authors, who can therefore consent to OA without losing revenue. In this respect scholars and scientists are very differently situated from most musicians and movie-makers, and controversies about OA to music and movies do not carry over to research literature.

OA is entirely compatible with peer review, and all the major OA initiatives for scientific and scholarly literature insist on its importance. Just as authors of journal articles donate their labor, so do most journal editors and referees participating in peer review. Read More>>

Effectively communicating the tangible benefits that Open Access provides is essential for open to become the default in both policy and practice. This year’s theme will help focus discussions during Open Access Week on those benefits of openness that are most compelling locally—whether that’s increasing citation counts, enabling anyone to learn from the latest scholarship, or accelerating the translation of research into economic gains—and encourage action to realize these benefits..”
