Diversity in Medicine: Intersectionality

Welcome! This guide covers Intersectionality, which will be a theme you will notice in the JEDI medical topic guides. While topical sections have been teased out, nothing exists in a vacuum and topics will often link with one-- or several!-- other(s). The linkage of these topics may be apparent or may not be acknowledged here due to the nature of these guides. This does not diminish the importance of intersectionality, and the librarians strongly encourage you to make intersectionality connections on your own. These guides will continue to grow as we learn, and we encourage you to open a constructive dialogue with us should you feel open to doing so.

Intersectionality is the term Kimberlé Crenshaw coined to describe the complex, cumulative way in which the effects of multiple forms of discrimination (such as racism, sexism, and classism) combine, overlap, or intersect especially in the experiences of marginalized individuals or groups (Merriam-Webster).
