Chicago Manual of Style

Welcome to the Chicago Manual of Style Subject Guide! Whether you're tasked with formatting your research paper for a specific course or publication and need guidance on formatting your paper, footnotes, or bibliography, you've come to the right place.

The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), currently in its 17th edition, has been an essential reference since its inception in 1906. Published by the University of Chicago Press, CMOS is revered among friends, writers, and publishers in fields such as history, philosophy, religion, and the arts. Informally referred to as CMOS or CMS, and sometimes simply as Chicago, this authoritative guide encompasses chapters pertinent to book and journal publishers, offering comprehensive standards for formatting manuscripts.

Widely adopted by academic and select trade publishers and editors and authors mandated by these publishers to adhere to its guidelines, the Chicago Manual of Style holds considerable influence. Kate L. Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations also aligns with the Chicago style, providing further support for academic writing conventions.

Within the CMOS framework, two primary styles emerge: Notes & Bibliography (NB) and Author & Date (AD). The Notes & Bibliography style, favored in humanities circles, particularly resonates with disciplines like history, which comprises one of its largest user bases. Conversely, the Author & Date style finds heavier usage in the sciences, catering to the specific needs of researchers and scholars in those fields.

Whether navigating the intricacies of footnotes, crafting a meticulously formatted bibliography, or adhering to the nuances of citation, the Chicago Manual of Style is an indispensable resource for scholars, students, and professionals. With its wealth of guidelines and meticulous standards, CMOS facilitates clarity, consistency, and professionalism in academic writing and publishing.

A good portion of this guide will come directly from the CMOS website.

The 17th edition of "CMOS" was published in November 2017 by the University of Chicago Press.
